Meet the Maker

Meet the Maker: Krista from Scene Skincare

This week we met Krista from Scene Skincare, who make a range of plastic free, vegan, natural vegan balms and moisturisers from their solar powered HQ in Cornwall. Here at in greens we have seven different scents of their Hand Balm in stock! The packaging is recyclable or compostable and all the ingredients are totally natural.

When did you start your company?

We officially started a year ago but had been working towards our launch for four years.

Where are you based?

We have just moved to an amazing eco new build unit in Falmouth – we generate our own power with solar panels. It is awesome!

How long have you been using natural skincare?

Several years and mainly making my own.

What inspired you on your journey to reduce your plastic waste?

Frustration! I couldn’t understand why the natural skincare on offer was often in single-use plastic. Things had to change!

What ‘ingredients’ are used to make your skincare range, and why?

We use just a few really good ingredients that we have researched over the years. We love mango butter for its hydrating and healing properties. This is probably our hero ingredient and we use it in everything we make.

Do you have a favourite essential oil or blend?

I think the clary sage blend with ylang ylang is my favourite. It has such a lovely fresh and comforting aroma.

Are your products vegan?

Yes absolutely!

What are your top tips for someone starting a zero-waste lifestyle?

Start small and swap out a few things at a time and don’t feel overwhelmed. There are so many more options becoming available so it’s getting easier.

What are your personal highlights as a sustainable business owner?

I am overwhelmed and delighted at how Scence has been embraced and I love working with like-minded retailers. It feels like we are making a difference.

Do you have any dreams or goals for the company?

Yes, we want to be the market leaders in sustainable and eco-friendly skincare and we can see that becoming a possibility with the daily confirmation we get from our customers.

Describe a typical work day at Scence:

We are growing so our roles are varied and we have to turn our hand to a bit of everything. Mel is in charge of production, GMP and stock control. I am sales/marketing/design/product development/admin person! We also have George in charge of labelling and carrying heavy sacks of ingredients and Lewis who is Mel’s lab assistant.
It is never boring round here!
